Video game publisher SEGA announces that a number of its employees at the American division have been laid off, although it is not ready to offer an exact number or exact reasons for the move.

VentureBeat quotes an official source at the company as stating that "As a result of this, Sega of America has recently undergone a restructure that will enable the company to focus efficiently on developing new and existing content across digital platforms as well as continuing to focus on key brands for packaged goods."

SEGA has had a strong presence in North America, but recently traditional franchises like Sonic have failed to find new fans and generate strong sales.

The company is becoming best known for working with real time strategy developers Relic, on Company of Heroes, and The Creative Assembly, on Total War.

SEGA will publish Sonic Lost World on the Nintendo Wii U and 3DS on October 18 in Europe and October 29 in North America.
