Video game publisher SEGA and developer Gearbox have announced that Aliens: Colonial Marines, their first-person shooter based upon the well-known series of movies, is set to be launched during the spring of 2012 on the Xbox 360 from Microsoft, the PlayStation 3 from Sony and the PC.

For a long time, it was believed that Aliens: Colonial Marines was canceled by SEGA as the Aliens themed Obsidian project previously was.

The game will allow players to inhabit the combat boots of a force of Marines as they explore the dark corners of space in order to face off against the Xenomorphs, the engineered killing machines that have scared and impressed both gamers and movie goers.

The Colonial Marine team will board a ship, called the U.S.S. Sulaco, that orbits around LV-426, and the development team promises a narrative that will deliver a shocking truth about the Aliens and about their ultimate aims.

The weapons will be inspired by the movies and the previous games and team work will be crucial to the player that wants to survive the assault from the Aliens.

Randy Pitchford, who is the president of Gearbox Software, has said, “To Gearbox Software and its peers throughout the industry, ALIENS is one of the most influential science fiction properties of all time. Aliens: Colonial Marines, designed as an interactive successor to the landmark films from Twentieth Century Fox, is a dream project about which our studio is deeply committed and passionate.”

Gary Knight, the senior vice president of Marketing working at SEGA Europe and SEGA of America, added, “Aliens: Colonial Marines will be THE definitive ALIENS gaming experience. Gearbox Software are doing a brilliant job translating the thrill and horror that ALIENS stands for into an action-packed shooter experience with co-operative gameplay at its core.”
