Video game publisher SEGA has announced that it has acquired the entirety of Three Rings, the San Francisco based studio that created the MMO Spiral Knights.

SEGA says that the acquisition is part of its strategy to aggressively move into the digital space and joins a stable of developers that includes The Creative Assembly, who created the Total War series, and Sports Interactive, the team behind Football Manager.

Spiral Knight will continue to be supported and Three Rings will launch a Doctor Who video game soon but then the studio will move to new projects linked to SEGA's online strategy.

Haruki Satomi, who is a senior vice president at SEGA of America, stated, “We knew from the first time we saw Spiral Knights that the team at Three Rings was not simply talented but truly unique, and the close bond we have formed with them over the past year has only solidified that impression.”

Daniel James, one of the leaders of Three Rings, added, “We are honored to be joining such a legendary team and look forward to collaborating on amazing ideas together.”
