Members of a trade group behind the SD industry allegedly declared at the 2009 CES that storage was most likely to cease being a problem in the near future, as cited by TechDirt. At the same time, a new mini card memory standard, codenamed the SDXC, has been introduced in the discussion, with the last two initials standing for Extended Capacity. Aside from the altogether good piece of news, one even better feature is that the new cards will not introduce a new form factor, at least not in their early stage.

This means that we will soon be able to endow our digital cameras, smartphones, and other microSD-enables portable devices with huge storage capabilities, at virtually no extra cost.

While the actual devices will be able to accommodate the new SDXC cards, it is expected that transfer speeds and data accessibility will also increase. Rex Sabio, co-chairman of SD Association (SDA), declared that the devices, which were due to support the new SDXC cards, would have new bus speeds, allowing them to reach transfer rates of around 140MB per second, between the SDXC slot and the media device, thus quadrupling the current speed.

Beyond all these affirmations, the new SDXC cards will run on the exFAT file system, also known as the FAT64. The exFAT will allow systems to handle files greater than 4 GB, and more than 1000 files per directory. At the same time, it is also expectable that the wireless data transfer protocols will increase performance, thus enhancing the new opportunities created by such large portable storage capacities.

Even though the SDXC is yet in its early development stages, Sabio said that the new storage solutions could be available at the next CES, letting us hope for the best. As well, there were no estimations made as to how high would the costs for the SDXC storage cards be. After all, anything that's new in the industry is sizzling expensive, but drops prices quickly after launch.
