Officials with the American space agency have just released an amazing image of the solar transit that Venus carried out between June 5-6. This particular photo was snapped by the NASA Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), which was one of the many telescopes trained on the Sun these couple of days.

In this view, Venus is the black disk in the upper left corner of the image. The photo was captured before the actual transit began. For scientists, ingress and egress (the beginning and end of the transit) are more important for data collection than any other moments.

SDO used its Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) instrument to capture this image. The device observes the full solar disk at white light, ultraviolet and extreme ultraviolet (EUV) energy ranges.

The telescope is managed by the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC), for the agency's Science Mission Directorate, in Washington, DC.
