SAM Linux Desktop is a self-booting live CD containing a complete and modern desktop OS. As a live-CD, you won't have to install it on the hard disk, but give it a try instead. The system was developed by a small team of devoted developers out of the PCLinuxOS.

Today, the SAM Linux team announced the availability of the first test version for SAM-2007. This test version is said to come with basic support for more than 50 languages and some proprietary ATI and NVIDIA drivers. The OpenOffice though was not included on the live CD. The system is based on the 2.6.20.11 kernel development version and all packets are updated to the latest versions' availability at the PCLinuxOS repositories. There are also some new ones added, such as Pdf-edit, Planner, search-monkey, Ntfs-config or VirtualBox. Some of the applications in SAM-2007.1 Test1 won't be in the official PCLinuxOS repositories, as they belong to the SAM developers, therefore they would be in the non-public (PCLOS compatible) SAM repo.

This Test 1 version comes after the release in March, 2007 of the Sam 2007 version. According to the developer's page, SAM 2007 was coming with the Xfce4.4 desktop, Beryl/Xgl and took in many useful desktop applications from various domains, such as Office, Games, Multimedia, Graphics, Internet, System, Security. SAM 2007 was also featuring Wine, Flash 9 and Java as well as Realplayer. One of the most important improvements the SAM 2007 version brought against the previous releases would be the fact that it was now possible to boot it also from a USB stick using the CD as start medium.

The SAM Linux does not have too many requirements either. A 300mHz CPU and 128MB of RAM should be enough. According to its developers, SAM could also run with 64MB RAM memory if there is a Swap partition, but this practice is not recommended.
