Zach Galifianakis has been working on his weight loss for quite some time now, but the fact that he keeps such a low profile unless he’s promoting a new project and his new styling made his appearance at last night’s Screen Actors Guild Awards 2015 a startling one.

He looked unrecognizable, voices online are saying – and in a good way, no less.

Thinner, different hairstyle, no beard

Zach Galifianakis has always been chubby but, as he joked last October, once he gave up the booze and the sausages, the pounds just started coming off. He never really encouraged serious conversation on the topic, only trying to make it clear that he wasn’t starving himself or anything like that: he was simply leading a much healthier life.

Last night, at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, where the SAGs were held, Zach cut a distinctive figure than before: not only was he thinner and not sporting a beard anymore but he was also rocking a man bun, the kind Jared Leto sported at the Oscars last year and that turned out to be all the rage online.

Zach got attention from the cameras twice in the evening, once during the opening bit called “I am an actor,” which you will find embedded below, and once when he and his “Birdman” castmembers went up on stage to accept the award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture.

He used Julianne Moore’s “When I was on ‘As the World Turns’” line, from her own acceptance speech, to make the emotional moment a bit funnier, and the crowd loved it.

Making light of the situation

As noted above, Zach never spoke about his weight loss the way many female stars do whenever they’re promoting something. During the promo tour for “Birdman,” he was asked about it but being a comedian allowed him to sidestep a real answer.

“[I lost] about 30 ounces [850g],” he joked. “I started walking a bunch and gave up booze. Booze, I was done with it. I couldn't wake up [like usual], so I stopped. I'm lucky that I could just stop, but boy I miss it. Being light is fun. I can go up two flights of steps now, and only need my inhaler twice.”

Word online has it that he lost anywhere from 50 pounds (22.6 g) to 60 pounds (27.2 kg).
