The 17th edition of the annual Screen Actors Guild Awards was last night at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles and, like with every other awards gala, there’s plenty to talk about in terms of the red carpet ceremony.

For starters, one should probably note that there weren’t any glaring faux pas in terms of fashion and / or behavior during the pre-awards show ceremony and that, even if there were some mishaps, the rest of the moments more than made up for them.

Unlike with the Golden Globes 2011 a couple of weeks ago, this time, the female stars kept it somewhat simpler, with fewer ruffles, bows and complicated designs.

Let’s break it down. As a side note, Mila Kunis is also in the Best Dressed category but, because her outfit was so appreciated, we talked about it separately

Best Dressed Ladies

Definitely the biggest surprise of the evening was television personality and comedienne Tina Fey, as E! Online also notes in its fashion column.

She rocked the red carpet – literally – in a red lace Oscar de la Renta strapless column dress, which wonderfully put her toned figure on full display, matched with a black clutch by Christian Louboutin.

Tina further accessorized with Lorraine Schwartz jewels and Giuseppe Zanotti shoes, also in black.

Claire Danes, always a very graceful and exquisite presence on the red carpet, looked fab in a patterned and summery gown by Louis Vuitton, which she accessorized with bracelets and earrings by Fred Leighton.

The gown was also accented by a black belt, which gave it a bit more oomph by showing off her tiny waist.

“Mad Men’s” January Jones, who usually makes quite a fuss about her incredible figure (not that anyone’s complaining), played it very cool in a structured Carolina Herrera in black and gold.

She also had on Lorraine Schwartz jewels, shoes by Roger Vivier shoes and a bag by Tod. However, what best complimented the dress was the hair styling, which was more on the severe side.

Nicole Kidman too looked extremely stylish in black, though some fashion insiders believe the detailing at the neck was a bit too much for a dress that already had plenty of details on it.

The Nina Ricci creation came with a back of lace and a bow, and see-through cutouts. Kidman also had on a Fred Leighton necklace, shoes by Manolo Blahnik and a Prada clutch.

Pregnant Natalie Portman, as we also noted before, wore an Azzarro “Jungle” column white gown, with $2 million in diamonds from Tiffany’s.

Worst Dressed Ladies

Before we move further, one should note that the ladies included here are not exactly poorly dressed: it’s just that either their styling leaves a lot to be desired or the entire world knows they could have done much better.

First off, Kim Kardashian, who went for the sophisticated yet still very hot look in a heavy Marchesa creation. E! believes she overdid it with the heavy embroidery and the asymmetrical design.

“Ah, the lone bedazzled [breast]. We imagine it must be kinda lonely just hanging out there, but then again it’s entirely possible the poor thing is used to it by now. It’s pretty clear Kim Kardashian loves asymmetrical bodices,” E! writes.

The color is working for her and so is the makeup, which she toned down considerably. On the other hand, the asymmetrical cut and the cutouts are not doing her any favors.

Jennifer Lawrence of “Winter’s Bone” is up next: this young actress tried to make a splash by choosing an Oscar de la Renta shocking pink gown, which should have, at least in theory, clashed with the red carpet.

Unfortunately, the makeup is too heavy, the hair is too tight and the poses are too awkward to make it work, says E!: it takes a very bold and confident girl to wear such a bold dress, and Jennifer certainly isn’t either just yet.

Usually quite a stunner on the red carpet, curvaceous Christina Hendricks of “Mad Men” opted for the wrong dress for the SAG Awards 2011.

She’s usually a big fan of ruffles and low-cut décolletages that puts her best assets in the best light possible, but with this L’Wren Scott gown, she looks like she just stepped out of the bathroom, fashion gurus agree.

The makeup was also bad because it was too severe for the already severe dress. Not even gorgeous jewelry by Sutra could help out with the look.

Winona Ryder looks like she ran from a wedding / prom and was caught like the proverbial deer in the headlines, just as she was about to make her escape, E! believes.

“Breathe in, breathe out. It’ll all be over soon and we promise you won’t have to leave the house again for a while, especially when wearing princess bride gowns like this one by Alberta Ferretti. But we gotta give Winona some credit – at least she was smart enough to complete the look with the perfect accessory for any out-of-place wedding dress: a pair of crazy eyes,” the e-zine writes jokingly.

Eva Longoria, who is by definition almost a pleasure to observe on the red carpet, was a bit “off” the other night.

Decked in a Georges Hobeika Spring 2011 couture gown, with a plunging neckline that left little to the imagination, the actress’ makeup was a bit too sparkly and white(ish), which made her look as if she had Botox only hours before hitting the red carpet.

It ruined her entire look, which would have been just perfect otherwise.
