The autopsy report is out: “Jackass” star Ryan Dunn was drunk and speeding when he crashed his Porsche in the early hours of Monday, killing himself and passenger Zachary Hartwell. Both died of blunt and thermal trauma, the findings reveal. As word of Dunn’s death broke, reports started to emerge online that
alcohol may have been a factor in the crash and subsequent explosion, especially since he’d tweeted a couple of photos of himself drinking and partying with friends, just hours before the tragedy.
Reports also said that Dunn drunk at least 3 beers and 3 shots before getting behind the wheel of his car. His love of speeding was well known and documented.
“The initial crash reconstruction investigation determined that Mr. Dunn’s vehicle was traveling between 132-140 mph at the time of the collision,” West Goshen Police Chief Michael Carroll says in a statement cited by
CNN.
Carroll also says that toxicology results indicate that Dunn was drunk at the time of the crash, with a blood alcohol concentration twice the legal limit, at 0.196%.
The two factors combined led to the accident that turned the star’s vehicle into a pile of flaming metal whose original form was hardly discernible.
“Upon arrival, police located one vehicle off the road and in the woods that was fully engulfed in flames,” Carroll says.
Earlier police reports said that the two victims were dead when the ambulance arrived on the scene, but that the fire had been so strong that they couldn’t determine whether they had died upon impact or in the explosion.
Further tests reveal now that the cause of death is by “blunt and thermal trauma.”
As we
also reported a few days ago, Dunn’s car ran off the road, hit a guardrail and was then sent flying through the air. When it hit the ground, it immediately caught fire.
Both Dunn and Hartwell were in their 30s.
