A video captured during a November practice session has prompted the dismissal of Rutgers' basketball coach Mike Rice.

Rice has been terminated this morning, one day after the tape was made public, NJ.com writes. The video captures incidents of violence and verbal abuse on the court.

The tape includes Rice mocking players' appearance, swearing and insulting them, telling them that they are gay, shoving them and throwing balls at them.

Even so, athletic director Tim Pernetti pushed to keep the coach after watching the tape at the time. Rice received a $50,000 (€39,000) fine and a three-game suspension.

"Dismissal and corrective action were debated in December and I thought it was in the best interest of everyone to rehabilitate, but I was wrong. Moving forward, I will work to regain the trust of the Rutgers community," Pernetti now says.
