Developer FacePunch says it wants to put the focus on survival, not zombies

The other acclaimed and successful Early Access zombie survival game, Rust, seeks to differentiate itself from DayZ by dropping the zombies.

The game's latest update removed the undead shamblers, replacing them with bears and wolves, but the devs mention that the new enemies are just placeholders, until they reveal what they plan on replacing the unrelenting mindless brain munchers with.

Developer FacePunch has stirred the masses, when the latest Rust patch notes announced the change. Reactions were mixed, with many fans of zombie survival games who wanted something similar to DayZ, which also has the unique options afforded by Rust, being left disappointed.

"We decided we couldn't hold off any longer. The longer we keep zombies in – the more complaints we'd get about removing them," FacePunch commented on the decision.

Rust is available on Steam Early Access, and allows its players to progress from throwing rocks to harvesting resources and crafting weapons, up to building majestic fortresses for passers-by to ogle.
