Even though it’s now playing a key role for Microsoft’s long-term strategy, Skype is frequently attacked for the way it treats users’ privacy, as IT experts across the globe warn that state authorities can easily monitor any conversation via the VoIP platform.

According to The Moscow Times citing a report by Vedomosti, Ilya Sachkov, general director of the Group-IB computer security firm, warned Russian users that local security services can easily read conversations, without even asking for the Court’s approval.

Other unnamed security experts told the source that Microsoft is currently providing state authorities with technologies to monitor users’ conversations all over the world, so Russia is not the only country where chats may be exposed.

Mikhail Pryanishnikov, the head of Microsoft's Russian branch, has reportedly confirmed that the Redmond-based technology giant could offer access to users’ conversations, but not without the Court’s consent.
