Itar-Tass has announced that Russia has launched Russian Express AM3, one of the latest-generation telecommunication satellite.

According to officials sources, the satellite was launched from Baikonur, on Friday and It came into orbit Saturday, at 06:15 Moscow Time. The booster rocket was a Proton-K.

The main purpose of Russian Express AM3 is to provide digital television and radio broadcasting and other digital services, into Russia and in some countries from SouthEast Asia.

The launch of Russian Express AM3 is the final stage of the programme to renew Russia's satellite system, which has started in December 2003.

Officials from Russian information technologies and communication minister hope that thanks to Russian Express AM3, over the next year and a half all schools in the Far East will be able to be equipped with broadband internet access.

The Krasnoyarsk-based Reshetnev scientific and production centre developed the satellite together with the French Alcatel Space company for the Russian Space Communication corporation.
