The 2013 Gruber Cosmology Prize was awarded to two astrophysicists from Russia for their work in understanding the evolution and structure of the Universe.

Vyacheslav Mukhanov and Aleksey Starobinsky have been awarded for transforming the humankind’s views regarding the origin of the Universe, as well as the formation of structure, the Prize givers mention, RT reports.

The two will also share half a million dollars for their efforts and have already been presented with the prize during the COSMO 2013 conference held at the Stephen Hawking Centre for Theoretical Cosmology at Cambridge University.

The two astrophysicists have provided answers to several major questions in cosmology, including why the structure of the universe is so uniform on the largest scales and where the departure from that uniformity, namely galaxies, planets and humans, came from.

The research “Developing Theory of Universe’s Earliest Moments” is considered to have a great contribution to the development of the foundations of modern theories of the universe’s expansion.
