Invited in the CBS Late Show with David Letterman, actor Russell Crowe apologized for throwing the phone into the employee's face, saying he was lonely and frustrated because he was unable to get calls through to his wife in Australia. Crowe is married to actress Danielle Spencer and they have a 17-month-old son, Charles Spencer Crowe

"This is possibly the most shameful situation I've ever gotten myself in in my life, and I've done some pretty dumb things in my life," the Australian actor told David Letterman. "So to actually make a new number one is spectacularly stupid."

"I'm extremely sorry for this whole incident and I regret everything that took place," the actor said to Letterman. "The bottom line is I did something pretty stupid.

The Australian movie star was arrested and charged by police with second degree assault and faces up to seven years in a New York jail.
