Regardless how much Russell Crowe stressed that he didn't care much about being Hollywood and maintaining a ripped physique, he was constantly picked on by the tabloids. Not so anymore: the actor is already back in top shape.

The Aussie's battle with the bulge is a well documented one and the explanation for it is simple: whenever he's doing a movie, he's in top shape, but once shooting is done, he reverts back to his old eating habits.

Russell himself has repeatedly said that he doesn't mind being a bit plumper but, as it turns out, he's recently realized that not getting enough exercise and indulging in treats wasn't healthy for him.

A few months ago, he embarked on a regime meant to overhaul his lifestyle and help him get back in shape.

The 47-year-old star recently stepped out, unveiling his much slimmer figure, the Daily Mail informs (it also has photos of the actor – and you can definitely tell he's lost a lot of weight).

Russell himself has never said why he suddenly decided to lose the weight, though he's been documenting his journey so far extensively on Twitter.

The Mail believes his role in the upcoming Superman film “Man of Steel” may have had a lot to do with it.

“A hardcore fitness regime has helped the 47-year-old star shed the flab and get back into peak condition. He looked like the action man of old as he pranced around in Sydney, Australia showing off his tanned and toned physique,” the British tabloid writes.

Indeed, there's no denying that Russell is looking good these days: he's slimmer and he's very toned.

“Just six months ago the movie hunk looked chubby as he went shopping for cigars in Beverly Hills, and had clearly piled on the pounds due to his unhealthy lifestyle,” the Mail notes.

“But it seems cutting down on treats such as cream cakes and going walkabout has come to rescue of the Aussie's waistline. No doubt starring as Superman's father Jor-El in the upcoming Man Of Steel movie helped inspire him to start pumping iron,” says the same publication.

Whatever his reason for doing it is, Russell has managed to motivate himself to lead a healthy life again.

Those of you who read his Twitter feed must know that it was no walk in the park, especially at first, but he's managed to stay motivated and focused on his fitness goal.
