14 DAY TRIAL // Katy Perry’s marriage to British comedian lasted for only 14 months, even though they kept telling everyone that they were in it for the long haul. According to Katy, it was Russell who decided to file the divorce papers - and he didn’t even bother to discuss it with her beforehand.
In a very callous move, he made the decision to get a divorce and he informed her of it by sending her a text message, Katy says in a new interview with The Daily Telegraph.
No friendly exes
Even when it’s not the case, celebrities always struggle to put on a show of togetherness for the media even after the divorce. The “we remain the best of friends” phrase is often used in separation or divorce announcements, and in most cases, it’s probably just a filler.
Katy and Russell make no such pretense: they got divorced and they’re no longer in contact. For them, filing for divorce was the end of the story.
“He hasn’t spoken to me since he texted me saying he was filing for divorce,” she says. “I don’t want to talk about him - my songs will say what I need to say.”
As you will notice, it does sound like Katy is saying that it’s Russell who won’t speak to her, because she would otherwise. This isn’t the first time that Katy hints that the split was entirely his idea, because he couldn’t accept that he had married someone as powerful and famous as she was.
A whirlwind romance, a heavily publicized split
Katy and Russell met at an MTV awards show and hit it off immediately. After a brief and passionate courtship, they were married in an extravagant ceremony in India, which included anything from all their friends (flown over in private jets) to a beautiful elephant which was included in the wedding.
Between their wedding day and the day they split, they would never stop gushing about each other, either in interviews or on social media, in a way that was uncommon for 2 celebrities of their status. Stars do tend to overshare, but they usually draw the line at their love life.
Still, when the divorce announcement came, it was a huge surprise. Later, it would be revealed that Katy was left heartbroken by her failed marriage, and that she had insisted they continued married to see if they could work things out.
Russell, on the other hand, was unhappy with her always being on the road and always working, which left little time for them as a couple. At the time, Katy had just kicked off a new tour.
By the sound of it, there’s still a lot of resentment about the split.
