007 was white for 50 years because Ian Fleming wrote a white character: James Bond is what it is, you can't change that

Rush Limbaugh took his time in voicing his opinion, but now that he’s getting going, he won’t stop until he says everything he has on his mind on the topic of a possibly black James Bond, after Daniel Craig is done with the part.

A few days ago, one of the emails stolen and leaked by Guardians Of Peace revealed that Sony executives, starting with co-chairwoman Amy Pascal, wanted Idris Elba as 007 after Craig was out, which would make the handsome Brit the first black actor to ever play the iconic MI6 agent created by Ian Fleming.

Rumor that Elba might take over from Craig in the legendary franchise has actually been around for at least a couple of years, but seeing Pascal put it down in an email makes it half-official and gives hope for those fans who have been rooting for Elba to finally land a breakthrough role. Playing James Bond would definitely help him earn the spot he deserves among Hollywood elite.

Now, if you ask Rush Limbaugh, he’d say that this would be the dumbest idea ever: we have had 50 years of white James Bonds, because Fleming created a white character, and that’s that. You can’t just bring an “African-English” actor on board because you’re trying to do the politically correct thing, he argues in his most recent podcast, which you will also find available below (at the 39.44 minute).

“Now Sony is suggesting that the next James Bond should be Idris Elba, a black Briton rather than a white from Scotland. But that's not who James Bond is, and I know it's racist to probably even point this out,” Limbaugh says.

However, it is what it is. Just like it would be outrageous to have George Clooney play Barack Obama in a movie about his life, it’s outrageous to have a black man play a white spy from Scotland, he argues. From what I’ve seen from comments on our previous post, many James Bond fans agree: James Bond was written white and he should stay that way.

Do you agree? Or would you give Elba a fighting chance?
