'Red Carpets and Other Banana Skins', Rupert Everett's autobiography, might be just the thing to prolong his fifteen minutes of fame, as the saying goes. After saying that his co-star in the romantic comedy 'My Best Friend's Wedding', Julia Roberts, stank of sweat and comparing her to, quote, a 'she-man, a beautiful woman with invisible balls', Rupert approaches a more personal perspective.
Thus, he said that he would rather have hair than sperm and that, in his bid to save his black locks, he has not a single drop of sperm left. But that doesn't bother him, as long as he gets to keep his good looks. Then, to make matters even more tragic (for him), Rupert said that he is such a pathetic lover that he even stopped wondering why he can't get a date on a Friday night.
While he had a couple of straight relationships (Susan Sarandon being one of the many women with whom he slept and later on spoke about), that he classified as a result of his youthful 'adventurousness', Rupert is openly gay. But, he says that growing up in such an enclosed environment and being different from the other boys has left a very strong mark on his abilities as a lover.
'Oh, I am a pathetic lover. Being Catholic, coming from a military background, then having that dawning, nagging feeling that I was not going to be on the right side of the fence. It had a knock-on effect on so many things and I felt so guilty for ages about sex, then with AIDS happening it was almost like my worst fears were true', Everett opened up in his autobiography.
Being a not so skilled lover is not something that he would be ashamed of, just like he isn't ashamed of not being able to get a date. 'So I don't think I have ever been a great lover really, no. Not in this lifetime. I am either too selfish or too extreme. Too vulnerable, or too self-centered. I never took myself seriously enough', Rupert added.
