FitnessKeeper Inc. makes this super intuitive health app called RunKeeper which, as of version 4.1 (out today in the iTunes App Store), tracks your steps in the background.

RunKeeper 4.1 includes the new “Pocket Track” feature for iPhone 5s owners, which offers background detection of walking activities. You no longer have to manage this function manually, though you can do so if you want.

A stride rate chart is also included, which lets you see how your rate changes when on the move. Auto-pause for running and walking activities is improved as well.

For all iPhone owners (5c, 5s, and 5) you get AirDrop integration for sharing results with others. You can also add nearby workout friends.

RunKeeper is free and requires only iOS 5 to run. The aforementioned key additions require iOS 7, the firmware that any iPhone 5s ships with.
