Security company Sophos released its malware monthly report sustaining that most of the malicious attempts are not conducted through the web. The research revealed that no more than 245.790 webpages were affected by malware that means almost 8.193 websites infected every day. Shocking but true. Usually, an infected website tries to exploit a user by luring him to the page and encouraging him to install malicious ActiveX controls or other dangerous files. According to the report, Mal/Iframe was discovered on 44.7 percent of the scanned websites while the second place was won by JS/EncIFra with no more than 19.7 percent.

"The Iframe-based attacks are a perfect example of a prolific web threat that target vulnerable sites - it doesn't care whether the site is hosting pornography or gardening tips. This problem is not just a niggle: Sophos research shows that a whopping 70% of web-based malware is being hosted on innocent but exploited websites. With people being lured to these innocent but compromised webpages via cleverly worded email invitations, web security has to go beyond blocking websites based upon category alone," said Carole Theriault, senior security consultant at Sophos, according to a press release published by the company.

China is again the country that hosted the biggest amount of malware websites with 56.4 percent, while the US earned the second position with 28.3 percent. Russia, a country that was often brought in the spotlights for illegal activities, is now placed on the third position with a "small" 5.4 percent. The last positions are taken by Ukraine (0.5%), Netherlands (0.4%) and United Kingdom (0.4%).

Although the security of our computer is more and more threatened by a lot of new malicious files, the report is somehow shocking because it reveals a huge amount of websites discovered every day. That's why it's extremely important to avoid visiting malicious websites and to install several security tools able to defend your computer.
