The much awaited Final Fantasy Versus 13 video game has apparently been renamed Final Fantasy XV and will only be launched on the PlayStation 4 home console from Sony, with the hardware maker working directly with Square Enix in order to enhance the experience.

It’s unclear who the source for the new information is, but VGLeaks has offered details about a number of hardware launches before companies have talked about them officially.

Final Fantasy Versus 13 is part of Fabula Nova Crystallis series and was expected to launch closely after the core game in the series.

But since then, Square Enix has delivered one expansion for FF XIII and is currently working on another one without offering more information on the Versus title.

The game was supposed to challenge the traditional structure of Final Fantasy and introduce more seamless transitions between battle and story sequences.

Noctis Lucis Caelum was supposed to be the main character of the game and the entire world was in a state of Cold War, with a single city that reached advanced civilization and a vast hinterland that is still stuck in Medieval times.

It’s unclear whether the move to the PlayStation 4 means that story and gameplay elements will remain unchanged or whether the joint Sony and Square Enix team has plans to remake the entire experience from the ground up.

At the moment, Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII is the game that’s confirmed for a 2013 launch on the PlayStation 3 from Sony and the Xbox 360 from Microsoft.

The PlayStation 4 will be launched before the Christmas shopping season and an exclusive Final Fantasy XIV release might be a good way to gain a sales advantage over the unannounced Xbox 720 from Microsoft.

Square Enix has confirmed that a new Final Fantasy title will be present at E3 2013.
