A posting on the official site of the online classification systems belonging to the Australian government suggests that publisher Ubisoft is working on a new Rayman video game that will be delivered using the new 3D gaming technologies that have been introduced to home console and will arrive on portables.
The game was classified as PG because of mild violence and the site offers no other clear information about it rather than the fact that development work is being handled internally by
Ubisoft, which is also set to publish it.
There's no clear launch window registered for Rayman 3D and there's no mention of the platforms on which the title might arrive.
The Rayman series began back in 1995 with the first video game in the platformer series and a sequel called The Great Escape followed in 1999, being successful enough to get ports to such devices like the Apple devices, the Nintendo DS, the PlayStation 2 and being ported to the PlayStation Portable and the PS3 in 2008.
The franchise got another title in 2002, Rayman Arena, and then Hoodlum Havoc appeared in 2003.
In 2006, a spin off called Raving Rabbids launched with Rayman having a starring role at first.
A game called
Rayman Origins is now being developed by Ubisoft, set to be released exclusively on the PlayStation Network and on the Xbox Live Marketplace, rebooting the series and adapting it to a new audience.
It's not clear what relation Rayman 3D will have with Origins.
It's unlikely that the 3D game will be just a port to a platform that supports the technology.
Rayman 3D could be a spin off that is specifically designed for the Nintendo 3DS, a platform which delivers three dimensional gaming without those unwieldy glasses, and might get an announcement before its launch date of February 26, 2011.
