A source familiar with current activity at developer PopCap Games has stated that the company has been making cuts for months and that a number of staff is set to be laid off in the coming days.

A representative from publisher Electronic Arts has stated that the company is not commenting on rumors and on speculation.

The rumors arrived just as PopCap Games has announced that it was working on Plants vs Zombies 2, which is set to be launched during the spring of 2013.

There are also rumors that a separate team is working on a team-based multiplayer shooter based on the same franchise.

PopCap Games was bought during August of last year by Electronic Arts for a figure of about three quarters of a billion dollars, and the publisher then said that it would make sure that games from the developer arrive on a larger variety of platforms.

The best-known PopCap titles include Peggle, Zuma, Bookwork and Bejeweled.
