The big PlayStation event on February 20 is drawing near and new information about the potential features of the new home console from Sony are appearing almost every day.

A report quoted by Joystiq suggests that the PlayStation 4 console will be able to use streaming technology to allow gamers to play titles launched on the old devices in the family while using normal retail means to get new titles.

The technology used will likely be based on the streaming system developed by Gaikai, the company that was acquired by Sony during 2012.

The streaming rumors might also mean that the new PlayStation console is different enough from the third to eliminate any discussion about backwards compatibility.

A streaming solution for older titles will require a significant upgrade for the PlayStation Network and a system to enable buyers to redeem titles that they already bought.
