Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, developed by Infinity Ward, is the biggest selling game of 2010 and publisher Activision must be pleased. But now the attention of the fans of the series is turning to developer Treyarch, which is working on the next game in the franchise. Details should soon appear considering that the new game might be ready for a November release.
A senior source working in the United Kingdom videogame industry told CVG that “It's going to be November again - just as with World At War and Modern Warfare 2. Activision believes that it can own Christmas 2010, just as it has in the last two years. Development is on course - and Treyarch have been told the game must be ready to hit shelves before the gifting season.”
The only problem with another November release day for Call of Duty is that the popularity of the franchise might actually hurt other titles slated for the same period.
Modern Warfare 2 prompted other publishers to push back games like BioShock 2, Splinter Cell: Conviction and Mafia 2 to the first six months of 2010.
The source also offered comment on the way the game would handle its narrative. Apparently, the main inspiration for the single player campaign will be the movies Platoon and Apocalypse Now. The Vietnam setting has long been rumored to be used for the new
Treyarch Call of Duty but it's a bit of a surprise to see the team building their game on two such bleak and overall grim movies.
After all, for the drama and betrayals, Modern Warfare 2 has been rather light on actually offering a glimpse into the horrors of war. Activision is known for tightly controlling information related to Call of Duty, one of its biggest franchises.
