It appears that Sprint and Motorola plan to announce a 4G Android-based smartphone in the next month or two and details about the device are starting to pour.

The first piece of information is the name of the device. Although preliminary news about the enigmatic phone didn't contain any tags for it, courtesy to the guys over at Phandroid we now know that the upcoming 4G device will be called Motorola Photon 4G, while its model number is MB855.

The Photon 4G is supposed to come with a qHD multi-touch screen and a dual-core NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor on board.

There are no details about the amount of memory or the number of pixels that its main camera will feature.

However, we should expect that the phone will be delivered with Android 2.3 Gingerbread platform, as well as secondary front-facing camera for video-chat.

Furthermore, the phone's form factor is said to be closer to Motorola DROID X and X2, especially when it comes to size, so we should expect the Photon 4G to carry a 4.3-inch display.

Apparently the smartphone has already received Wi-Fi certification one month ago, so we should expect to see it approved by FCC anytime soon.

Of course that's if the manufacturer didn't ask for confidentiality, which might put us in the dark for the time being.

Motorola Photon 4G might be Sprint's answer to AT&T's Motorola ATRIX, but if the former will be announced two months from now there won't be a challenge to the ATRIX.

No information regarding the phone's price has been disclosed yet, but Sprint usually offers its newly launched Android smartphones for about $200 with new two-year agreements, so that could be the case here.

Stay tuned for more updates on the matter as we receive word about the upcoming Motorola Photon 4G.
