A massive rumor has just appeared concerning the next iteration in Sony's God of War franchise, with a report saying that God of War 4 is set to appear on September 2012.

Sony's God of War series may have seen the end of its trilogy last year, when God of War 3 concluded the adventures of Kratos, but this doesn't mean that the franchise has been shelved.

Instead, Sony is aiming to release a brand new game very soon, according to a report published by PSM3, via CVG, which says that God of War 4 is already scheduled to appear in September of next year.

The magazine says that one of its inside sources has revealed that Sony's Santa Monica team, which developed the God of War series since the first game, is already working hard on the new title.

Sony is keen on continuing the extremely popular hack and slash franchise, even without fan favorite Kratos, so it's going to be very interesting to see where the series will go in the future.

It may be possible to see a new God of War game release in just two years, largely because the developer already has the very impressive technology it used on the third game up and running.

There was a pretty big gap between the release of God of War 2, back in 2007, and God of War 3, back in 2010, which was mostly owed to the Santa Monica studio working on a brand new engine that will do the series justice on the PlayStation 3.

The new God of War has already seen its first batch of rumors appear in recent months, with job listings from Sony Santa Monica calling for engineers that are experienced in building multiplayer and cooperative experiences.

This prompted many to believe that the new God of War might see the introduction of such mechanics, but we shouldn't forget that the team may also be working on a new project besides the popular hack and slash series.

As you can expect, Sony hasn't commented on the rumor, so God of War fans need to keep on waiting for a new game, with or without Kratos.
