A source has told VG247 that the development studio Crystal Dynamics is working on a reboot of the Legacy of Kain series and plans to use the Soul Reaver name, which has previously used by at least one other title in the series.

The source says that the reboot includes a new art direction and is a completely new take on the concept, using the same name and the sane universe but a completely new set of mechanics.

The source has said that a reveal for this year’s E3 trade show in Los Angeles was planned at one point but that recent information coming out of the project says that this might not happen.

It’s not clear whether the team at Crystal Dynamics is interested in bringing back main characters Raziel or Kain or whether they will focus on telling the story of an entirely new vampire that will probably seek revenge for past crimes.

The Legacy of Kain series is made up of five video games that were launched on a variety of home consoles and on the PC between 1996 and 2004.

The most celebrated of them is Legacy of Kain: Soul Reacer, which was delivered during 1999 on the PlayStation and the PC and then received a port to the Dreamcast.

The game was praised for the mix between a dark, gothic atmosphere and solid gameplay mechanics both when it comes to exploration and to battles.

At the moment Crystal Dynamics is putting the finishing touches on their reboot of another successful franchise, Tomb Raider, which is set to be launched during this year on home consoles.

The game will see Lara Croft going on her first adventure and use a stripped-down series of abilities to deal with the environment around her.

The development studio has confirmed that it is also working on a new video game project.
