Word on the so-called rugged Samsung Galaxy S 4 emerged a few days ago when a Samsung exec confirmed the company planned to release such a device in the not so distant future.

Today, The Wall Street Journal confirmed what Samsung's Gulf Electronics President Young Soo Kim stated recently.

According to the cited source, Samsung will debut a rugged Galaxy S 4 sometime this summer, possibly in July.

The smartphone will be known as Samsung Galaxy S 4 Active and is expected to arrive around the same timeframe as the Galaxy S 4 mini.

The “ruggedised” Galaxy S 4 will maintain the same specifications, but it will offer additional protection. Just like the Xperia Z, it will be water and dust-proof, and will probably have some other features specific to a rugged device.

Aimed at those who work in pretty harsh environments or like extreme sports, the Samsung Galaxy S 4 Active is likely to cost a bit more than the standard model.

So far, we've been unable to find out what material Samsung will use for Galaxy S 4 Active's chassis, but if it's still plastic, its price should not be that much higher than the original model’s.

Other than the ruggedised outfit, the Galaxy S 4 Active won't be much different than the standard Galaxy S 4 smartphone.

However, it remains to be seen whether Samsung will choose the same Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 chipset that packs a quad-core CPU and an Adreno 320 GPU, or it will pick the more powerful Exynos 5 Octa 5410 chipset.

In the same piece of news, Samsung plans to announce a new series of Galaxy tablets, which is likely to include 7 and 10.1-inch models.

Some of these unannounced Android devices might go official in the next few weeks, but for the time being they're set for a July release. Stay tuned for more updates on the matter.
