Ruben Studdard got his start on American Idol but, as of October 8, when Biggest Loser returns for season 15, he will also be known as the first celebrity contestant to be on the show.

With the new season nearly around the corner, Studdard is taking the time to stress that the reason he accepted to do the weight loss challenge is not because he wants to look good on the cover of his next album but because he’s realizing the risks he’s running weighing as much as he does.

In the interview embedded above, for instance, he explains that he’s never been as heavy as he is today (462 pounds / 209.5 kg). Health issues have started creeping up on him and he knows that he can’t go on like this for ever.

Biggest Loser for him is not only a temporary challenge, because he is thinking long-term with his weight loss, he plans to stay healthy for the rest of his life.

He also plans to win the competition but whether he’ll actually succeed remains to be seen.
