We can all agree on Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney being friends now. Especially after what happened in the World Cup quarterfinals, the English media was certainly not hoping for that to happen. Nevertheless, the English striker defended his Manchester United teammate soon after the match, admitting that: "I would have done the same if I were him".
Still, the media campaign against Cristiano Ronaldo was ruthless and pretty dangerous. Not only Ronaldo had to suffer from it, but
his family too. His residence in Manchester got broken into and one of his cousins got assaulted by angry English fans. Soon after coming back to Manchester, the "devils" fans showed remarkable character and applauded Ronaldo's comeback.
Rooney wanted to assure all English fans that he was not angry with Ronaldo and the World Cup incident was water under the bridge. More, he defended his teammate from "diving" allegations, stating: "He gets a lot of unfair decisions against him. The refs are trying to grab headlines too much rather than ref a game".
As for what happened at the World Cup, Rooney told the media that Ronaldo was not to blame for England's failure: "Whenever England do not do well in a World Cup or a major tournament, people look for a scapegoat. Unfortunately, this year a lot of the press have turned on Cristiano and tried to make him that. I spoke to Cristiano. I am not going to lie. I was disappointed with his involvement in the sending off. But that is in the past now. We are both playing for Manchester United and trying to do our best for them".
Ronaldo made a great comeback to Manchester United on Tuesday, when he scored 2 goals in Manchester's friendly against Oxford United.
