Robert Butyka, the 26-year old Romanian hacker known as Iceman, famous for breaching into several NASA-owned servers, was indicted by US prosecutors after Romanian courts sentenced him to three years in prison.

According to Antena3, LA prosecutors want the hacker to face another trial in Los Angeles, where he is charged of breaching 25 computers belonging to NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in December 2010, causing a prejudice of $500,000 (350,000 EUR).

If he is found guilty in the US, he may face a maximum sentence of ten years in prison.

Even though he was sentenced on January 17 to three years in prison in Romania, since the decision was not final, he was released. He is expected to appear in front of a court on March 13 to face a civil lawsuit in which NASA demands $580,000 (406,000 EUR) as compensation for the damages caused by the defendant.

Butyka admitted to his crimes, requesting that the trial take place behind closed doors, a request approved by the court.
