ThreatTrack Security experts warn that the app is bundled with adware

Security researchers from ThreatTrack Security have come across a number of executable files purporting to be installers for the popular photo messaging application Snapchat.

It turns out that users who search on Bing for Snapchat are presented with sponsored ads that point to videonechat(dot)com.

The site appears to be hosting a Snapchat installer, but a closer look reveals that the piece of software that users actually download is Dorgem, an old webcam capture application.

Users who download the installer are still led to believe it’s Snapchat. Only in the final phases of the installation process, a Dorgem setup program is presented.

Those who proceed with the installation (at least the “quick” installation), end up with a variety of applications designed to serve ads. While most of these pieces of adware are not malicious, they can certainly be annoying.

That’s why it’s highly recommended that you only download applications directly from the vendor or from trusted websites. Check out the gallery to see what the bogus Snapchat website and the installers look like.
