Canadian mobile phone users will have the possibility to choose from a wider series of handsets running under Google's Android operating system starting with the next year, as Rogers, the largest wireless carrier in the country, has just announced that it plans on releasing at least one such device coming from Motorola.

As many of you might already know, the operator launched two Android mobile phones this year, namely the HTC Dream and Magic, and is expected to add more such handsets in the near future. At the same time, Motorola is already known to be working on a series of Android devices, and should announce specific details on its plans for the operating system today.

“It's going to be pervasive and it's going to create a lot more smart phones,” is what Rob Bruce, president of Rogers Wireless, stated about the Android operating system, reports Financial Post. “There will be a Motorola Android device in our portfolio in 2010,” he added. While there are no doubts when it comes to the carrier's plans, it remains to be seen what Motorola devices it will actually launch.

According to a recent report from Gartner, the sales of smartphones have seen an impressive growth during the second quarter of the ongoing year, 27 percent all around the world, although the entire mobile phone market has dropped by about 6.1 percent in the time frame. With smartphones expected to see further growth in the future, it is obvious that carriers would add more such devices to their offering.

When it comes to the operating systems that smartphones run under, Android is one platform that looks quite promising, as there were a lot of phone makers and carriers that announced support for the OS, with both Motorola and Rogers among them. Motorola should announce today what Android handsets it plans to bring to the market in the near future, and maybe will also learn what phone Rogers' customers will receive, so stay tuned to learn more details on this.
