Canada's only GSM carrier

Since the iPhone will be available exclusively for one network from each region and in the case of the US, the one to offer it will be At&t, most of the customers from Europe, Canada and other areas worldwide are probably wondering which mobile operator will provide the iPhone.

According to rumors, Canadian users were supposed to be getting the iPhone through their number one carrier Rogers Wireless. Recently Rogers, the only GSM provider in Canada, announced that any information on the iPhone's availability on its network is pure speculation. Unfortunately, since there's no other mobile operator providing GSM and Rogers is apparently considering dropping the iPhone entirely if it doesn't prove to be cost-effective, customers in Canada may not get Apple's phone after all.

"We haven't announced whether we will carry the iPhone," Odette Coleman, manager of corporate communications for Rogers Wireless, said in an e-mail to CBC News Online. "Everything in the media has been speculations to this point. The only fact is that we are the only GSM carrier in Canada. That's the only fact."

Truth be told, since Rogers is the only GSM provider in the country, it wasn't hard at all for all to assume that it was to get Apple's phone, even though no other details pointed to that. Nevertheless, iPhone fans in Canada shouldn't give up on the highly anticipated handset just yet. There's still a chance that Rogers is considering keeping all this information from its customers for the time being. Also, if the iPhone does well on At&t, Rogers may think things over and release it after all. It's not like there's any other carrier in Canada that could compete with them over the handset.
