Rogers subscribers that own an HTC Magic are about to receive their long awaited Android 2.1 OS upgrade. The Canadian carrier announced, more or less officially, that the update is already undergo approvement from Google, so it can be pushed in the near future.

Rogers HTC Magic is currently powered by Android 1.5 OS, same as HTC Dream, another smartphone that the Canadian carrier offers to its customers.

Unfortunately, while the former device is surely getting the upgrade, HTC Dream users will be disappointed to find that the device will not be developed beyond Android 1.5 OS due to certain limitations.

The good news for Rogers HTC Magic owners was posted on Android Forums website, by one of the carrier's PR officials.

It seems that as soon as the carrier received the Android 2.1 OS update from HTC, it started to thoroughly test it.

Even though Rogers wanted to deliver the update by the end of August, it seems that they found found an issue that required it to go back to HTC for further development.

Further, the carrier received the re-worked update yesterday and the 2.1 OS update for Magic was already approved by Rogers. The update has now gone to Google for approval and assuming there are no further issues HTC will start rolling it out.

The update will be delivered OTA, but require Rogers HTC Magic users to get the latest 1.5 OS update that brings Sense UI on the device. Otherwise, they won't be able to upgrade OTA and will be forced to manually download and install the 2.1 OS update.

Of course, those that already rooted their Magic devices to 2.1 or even 2.2, won't be able to receive the update OTA and will have to do it manually.

Also, bear in mind that making the upgrade will break the root and will possibly make it harder to root it again if it comes with a perfected SPL.
