Rogers says its Dream users can upgrade to Magic for free, to receive Android 2.1

HTC Dream and HTC Magic are the first mobile phones from HTC that arrived on the market with Google's Android operating system on board, and both of them were launched at the same time in Canada via Rogers Wireless. As soon as Android 2.1 made it into the wild, the mobile phone operator announced that only Magic would be updated to the new platform version, leaving Dream users only with Android 1.5 on their phones; yet, now good news are coming their way from Rogers.

The Canadian wireless carrier reportedly revealed that, due to the fact that Dream could not be updated to Android 2.1, it would offer its users the possibility to taste the new OS flavor through upgrading to Magic for free. Not all details of the offer have been finalized just yet, but all the necessary info is expected to be unveiled to users in the near future, it seems. According to mobilesyrup, Rogers stated that it would put all things in order by the next week, and most probably that will be the time when the promotion will kick off.

“It’s great to hear that everyone is pleased by HTC’s agreement to upgrade Magic to 2.1. We pushed hard on your behalf and are pleased with that part. When it comes to Dream, we share in your frustration that the device does not have the required on-board memory for an upgrade. We’ve reviewed this internally and believe that Dream users should be able to have the same HTC Android experience as those who purchased the Magic. So, we are offering our HTC Dream customers a limited time opportunity to upgrade from their current HTC Dream device to the HTC Magic,” Rogers said in a statement, reports mobilesyrup.

There are two parts of the deal that should be taken into consideration here. On the one hand, Dream users can rejoice knowing that Android 2.1 will come to them if they switch to Magic, while on the other hand, they will have to start using a device that has no physical QWERTY keyboard, even if that is not a deal breaker in the end. For what it's worth, Android 2.1 should be capable of delivering an experience improved enough so as to make Dream users forget about that QWERTY keyboard. Stay tuned for additional details on this as soon as they are available.
