As expected, Day 3 of the Roland Garros tournament meant Andy Roddick's exit. Wanting to take his chances in the French Open anyway, after suffering an ankle injury earlier last week, Roddick had to face an early elimination. He only managed to keep the pace with his opponent - Alberto Martin - in the first 2 sets, while the third saw him suffering a great deal of pain.

After being led 6-4, 7-5 in the opening round, the American retired at 1-0 in the third set. You could
sense something was wrong with Andy all the way, since the 2 sets he gave up to Martin in this meeting were the first ones in his last 4 encounters with the Spaniard. Leaving the French Open, Roddick has to face the fact that France was never his favorite country. Never, in his 6 appearances in the tournament, did he manage to get past the 3rd round. That proves, once again, that his game on clay needs a lot of bettering in the months, or even years, to come.

The American was not the only player who had to leave the French Open due to injury problems. British rising star Andy Murray had to suffer a bad loss to Frenchman favorite Gael Monfils. The Englishman eventually stayed on court - despite his back injury - and lost the game 6-4, 6-7, 1-6, 6-2, 6-1.

Another tennis star, who had to fight with injury problems before the start of the tournament, Australian Lleyton Hewitt, safely went through to the second round, after managing to pass Czech's Jan Hernych 7-6, 3-6, 6-2, 6-0.

In the most expected game of the second round, Fernando Gonzalez proved to be way too strong for Russian Marat Safin. The Chilean went through the third round, with a 6-3, 1-6, 6-3, 6-1 win over his opponent, and might meet Rafael Nadal in the quarterfinals.

Other interesting results are:

Tommy Haas - Reiner Schuettler 6-4, 6-3, 6-3
Albert Montanes - Robby Ginepri 6-3, 6-7, 6-1, 6-4
Marco Baghdatis - Albert Portas 6-4, 6-4, 6-7, 6-1
