In a shock movement, MTV has managed to get Amy Winehouse to perform a duet with Pete Doherty at the MTV Europe Music Awards tonight. The troubled British singer was confirmed as a last minute addition to the line-up yesterday and is hoping to wow the audience by joining the Babyshambles rocker on stage. And yes, I must admit it's going to be extremely interesting to watch these two addicts together. I'm not exactly afraid they will take out a crack pipe and start doing drugs together on stage, but as Amy's recent disastrous series of concerts in Europe has proved, there are many ways in which a druggie can mess up their own shows.
A source said: "MTV have been trying to persuade Amy to appear for ages. When she heard Pete was performing she thought it could be fun. Amy and Pete are going to get together to see if they can work out a duet. The organizers wanted to add a bit of spice to what is seen as a squeaky-clean awards show."
Pete and Amy - who have both spent serious time in rehab and are notorious for their substance abuse - have been working on new material for some months now and are said to be looking forward to giving the world a sneak preview of their efforts at Munich's grand Olympiahalle. The source stated for The Sun newspaper: "They have been working on material together with the plan to perform it. This would be a perfect place to do it."
While Babyshambles are not nominated in any categories, Amy is in the running for three awards: Best UK & Irish Act, Most Addictive Track (for 'Rehab') and Best Album (for 'Back to Black'). Other artists that will perform at the ceremony, hosted by Snoop Dogg, are Foo Fighters, Mika, Avril Lavigne and My Chemical Romance.
It's a big night for MTV bosses (and I mean that in the worse possible sense), who not only have to fear a possible catastrophe caused by Wino or Doherty, but also Snoop Dogg's foul mouth. The rapper has been warned to tone down his foul language when he hosts the Awards. "MTV know that Snoop has a huge fan base, so it's a huge coup to get him to host the awards. But let's just say there'll be a few executives who'll be terrified on the night just in case he starts cursing."
Snoop - who sparked 400 complaints when he shouted "motherf****r" at Live 8, which was televised on the BBC, in 2005 - is said to be planning on "taking things to a whole new level" as this year's host. He said: "Munich, get ready, because the 'Big Boss' is taking over your city and hosting this year's EMAs. Past presenters have been great, but this year I'm taking it to a whole new level. I've called up my homeys from east to west, and I guarantee it's going to be off the chain! You dig?" Big night ahead...stay tuned for the news.
