14 DAY TRIAL // Mousepads weren't much more than small rectangles of material meant to allow a mouse's ball to roll properly, but they have come a long way since then, as Roccat has just proven with the Siru.
And we don't just mean in terms of mouse responsiveness, although mousepads have had to adapt and improve as ball-based mice were replaced by optical and laser models.
Roccat made sure that no optical or laser mouse choked when gliding over the surface of the Siru. The pad is supposed to be a “a battle-ready, easy-to-clean surface with high glide and control.”
The company has even made the underside from a reusable non-slip material that prevents the 0.45 mm-thin sheet from sliding away under the weight of your wrist.
For those who want to know the full details, the Roccat Siru measures 340 x 250 x 0.45 mm / 13.38 x 9.84 x 0.01 inches. “Knife-edge-thin” as it were.
According to the designers, this is good because it provides “direct desktop feedback” and, consequently, “true and precise tracking” and “rapid, accurate cursor corrections.”
That said, the surface is smooth. Since there is no need to cause friction with a ball, as would be the case for age-old mice, Roccat was able to focus on superior glide. This can be said about lots of other mousepads though.
More important is that the “innovative surface has precise control,” which prevents over-aim and under-aim.
Add to that the two color options, Cryptic Blue and Pitch Black, and you have everything you could possibly need to play shooters or strategies at your best.
Roccat even said it tested the Siru with over 80 laser and optical mice. Field-tested, whatever that happens to mean.
Unfortunately, the price can make or break the deal, and Roccat did not mention it in its press release. Given the support for mouse resolutions of 16,800 DPI, though (beyond what any mouse can handle as far as we know), it might be kind of steep. Then again, hardcore gamers usually have more than enough money to spend on such things.
