Earlier this year, word got out in the media that Simon Cowell, the man behind the hit machines X Factor and Britain’s Got Talent, wanted to sign actor / singer Robert Pattinson to his SyCo label.
At the time, the “Twilight” heartthrob made no mention of the reported music deal, which could have gotten him the kind of exposure he could only dream of.
Now, in a recent interview cited by
AceShowbiz, Pattinson confirms that Cowell (and not only) was indeed after him with a music deal, one which he turned down.
As Robert sees it, the SyCo label and Cowell’s management could have guaranteed Pattinson his music would reach out to fans for the simple reason that he’s rather unmarketable.
This is actually the only reason why he turned down Simon and many other big label bosses that sought him out with offers for very lucrative contracts.
“I love Simon, I think he is a great personality and I think his shows are entertaining,” Robert is quoted as saying.
Sadly, the kind of star that Simon usually promotes isn’t anything remotely similar to Pattinson, and that’s why he turned him down.
“He is a clever guy and he created artists that he knows the public will like, that’s why I don’t think he could ever launch my music career,” the actor explains.
Not only is he unmarketable but he’s also somewhat unmanageable, in the sense that he’s used to do things his way and would probably have a hard time complying with the demands of a big record label.
“I am selfish with my music. I get my guitar and I play what I like, but the problem is I don’t think many other people would like it,” Pattinson says.
However, that’s not to say he’s lost all hope of one day being appreciated for what he is, without having to change a thing about his music.
“I am sure I’ll be one of those artists that people don’t pay any attention to while I’m alive, and when I am dead people will go yeah, man, that was a work of art,” Pattinson adds.
He doesn’t say though whether he has any plans of going indie with his music.
