The actor is trying to get Gibson back into focus

Robert Downey Jr. is not just an awesome actor, he's also a good friend. He is currently one of the highest paid actors in Hollywood, but he's also thinking about the less fortunate around him. In an effort to get Hollywood to forgive Mel Gibson's transgressions, he's now pushing for the Aussie to direct the latest “Iron Man” film.

Deadline had an interview with Downey and the actor came clean about the condition he'll do Iron Man 4. Granted, the scenario was pretty much set up by the interviewer, but Downey did not back down from the proposal.

“Marvel badly wants Iron Man 4 and you’ve said you aren’t doing it. How about the idea you’ll do that movie if Mel directs it?” said the interviewer, to which Robert dryly replied “Correct.”

The interviewer then asked Downey if this could be the interview's title and he again had nothing against it: “Why not? That movie would be bananas.”

Gibson might be a troubled actor, but as a director, he shines behind the camera. His movies included huge titles such as “Braveheart,” “Apocalypto” and “The Passion of the Christ.” However, his chances of being hired by Marvel to do the next Iron Man are pretty slim.

The only way this is going to happen is if Robert Downey gets it into writing that he's only on board if Gibson directs. Even so, Marvel is likely to deny Gibson the opportunity to work on their project. Since his anti-Semitic rant from a few years back, Gibson has been blackballed by the industry and there is little chance he'll be back in or even allowed to make amends.
