Robert Downey Jr. has certainly seen his ups and downs, as all his fans and especially those who stuck with him when few industry people wanted to work with him as well, and he’s well aware of that. In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, whose cover he also graces in character as Sherlock Holmes, the actor says he’s happy with the “gifts” he has now but, since he doesn’t like making plans, acting could soon be history for him.

It’s not that he doesn’t like or doesn’t want to continue in the business, Downey explains, but rather that, judging from his past experience, things can – and do – change overnight. If that were to happen again, then he’d probably be out of a job in a blink of an eye, which is why he’s now trying to convince himself that fretting over it or having regrets is not the way to go. One thing that he’s certain of: he’s an awesome actor, he says laughing.

When asked whether he can see himself doing the same in 10 years’ time, Downey is honest. “I’m [expletive]-ing really good at what I do – and have been for a long time, so I don’t waver on that. But here’s the thing: I can only be a guy on a call sheet probably, I don’t know, maybe a couple more times. It’s something I’m so grateful to have in my palm, and yet I already see its inevitable decay. If ‘Sherlock Holmes’ performs well, I could be busy for the next 5 or 7 or 10 years,” the actor explains.

“I have no set plans for my future. I’ve never had it this good – this is my day in the sun – and I certainly don’t want to look a gift horse in the molars. But [my wife] Susan and I want to begin to be in our lives as much as we are in our jobs. I’d love just to sit here and say, ‘What movie’s playing tonight?’ I’d love to finish the new book about D-day I’m reading. I love painting, I love music,” the star also says.

Until he decides what to do with his future and whether acting should be a part of it or not, fans can see Robert Downey Jr. as the legendary Sherlock Holmes in the movie with the same name, out in theaters precisely on December 25.
