US Army sergeant Robert Bales has been sentenced for numerous killings in Afghanistan. He has been awarded life in prison without the possibility of parole.

According to a report by Reuters, Army Staff Sergeant Robert Bales, fatally shot 16 civilians in Kandahar province in March 2012. The majority were women and children and they were not armed during the attacks.

He apologized for killing the innocent people and explained his acts by mentioning feeling fear and bravado. The defense also made a case for post-traumatic stress disorder as being a factor in the incident.

As I wrote last year, the decorated sergeant served four times in Iraq and Afghanistan before going on several night-time shooting sprees.

Earlier this year, he pleaded guilty to murder in order to avoid being sentenced to death.
