Chicago's director and choreographer Rob Marchall has just finished another project: a big screen adaptation of Arthur Golden's best-seller "Memoirs Of A Geisha".
At the world premiere in Tokyo, Japan, the director confessed he is nervous about the reaction of the fans of the book, being a well known fact that adaptations of novels rarely succeed in pleasing faithful readers.
"It was very scary to take on a novel that was so loved by so many.
I think there are many mis perceptions about what
geisha are, especially in the West. I hope this film helps to clear that up."
Michelle Yeon, a member of the cast (portraying Suyiri's mentor Mameha), added: "We tried really hard to get things right, to honor and respect the tradition of the geisha."
According to IMDb.com, it took a lot of negotiating to get Rob Marshall to direct the film, because, since he directed "Chicago" in 2002 for Miramax, he owed his next film to them. But, as Miramax and DreamWorks have a long history of borrowing talent from each other, it was possible for the two companies to work out a deal.
