Bandai Namco has announced an upcoming 2v2 fighting game, Rise of Incarnates, set in a completely new universe and scheduled for release in the latter half of 2014.

The game is being made by the creators of Tekken, Gundam Extreme VS, and SoulCalibur, aiming to bring to life unfettered 3D battles and a unique take on team combat. Players will be cast in a variety of roles, being able to control a multitude of characters and duke it out in a wide range of battlefields.

Each character type presents a unique skillset, appealing to a variety of play-styles and accommodating multiple team dynamics, challenging players to employ sharp reflexes and mental resolve while running, jumping, and flying through the arenas in order to engage in close-quarters combat or long-rage assaults.

The game is set in a post-apocalyptic Earth, where humans with special abilities – named incarnates – roam the land freely. These incarnates possess daimons, who can draw special powers from gods, demons, and monsters from ancient mythology.

As the story of X-Men goes, their supernatural powers make the general public fear them and the authorities attempt to control them for their own purposes, until one day a voice speaks to them all, instructing them to defeat the Sovereign of the era in order to avoid certain destruction.

Each incarnate interprets the message in a different way, with some seeing it as a revelation while others dismissing it as a mere hallucination. Some take it as a foreboding omen of a grim future, while others decide to take advantage of the situation to fulfill their innate desires.

Whatever their motives and choices, none of them knows what exactly the "Sovereign of this era" means, but nonetheless, they start fighting each other, and now the fate of life on Earth in its entirety hangs in a frail balance.

"As a new franchise, Rise of Incarnates represents the next big step in expanding BANDAI NAMCO's footprint in the Free-to-Play gaming space. Having been built from the ground up, Rise of Incarnates contains the necessary attributes that create a rich and dynamic gaming environment that fans are sure to enjoy," said In Joon Hwang, director of Digital Games at BANDAI NAMCO Games America Inc.
