Riot Games just began the open beta for its new API. The API allows developers to pull data on League of Legends players and leagues directly from Riot's servers.

Riot made an appreciated effort to provide official support for community developers, especially since there already are plenty of unofficial companion apps for Riot's multiplayer online battle arena game.

Riot is currently giving out demo keys for their product for free, and seekers can log into the company's developer portal with their League of Legends account info to get one, according to GamaSutra.

The official claims have been that these demo keys will allow for a limited number of API calls, just enough to prototype their product – five calls in one second, or 50 in one minute.

The option for a full production-level key is open to developers who want better access, but said developers have to submit their app for review and registration with Riot. The number of production-level keys is limited during the beta period.

The API currently services North America and Europe, and Riot stated that support for data from other regions is expected to be available at a later date.
