This enormous amount is an estimate for the United States only, whereas in the same region video games, whose popularity constantly increased lately for mobile phones too, are expected to generate an overall $430 million income.
The "Wireless Market Forecast, 2004 to 2009" JupiterResearch study estimates the trends on the mobile telephony and accessories market for the upcoming four years.
According to the study, the ringtones
only generated $91 million in the USA during 2003; last year the overall amount reached a stunning $217 million.
These amounts might however appear as small change as compared to the JupiterResearch estimates for 2009, when US ringtone providers are thought to reach $724 million.
The video game market adheres to the same boosting trend, but the amounts are however consistently lower. The 2003 income was $24 million; last year the income tripled, going as high as $72 million. The 2009 estimates indicate an overall $430 million income.
In spite of this constant and rapid boost, the ringtones and the video games only stand for a maximal 10 percent of the US mobile telephony business for last year. During the next five years there is hope that messaging will remain to its present 65% share of non-voice services.
The most attractive offer should bear diversity in mind, combining popular games, background pictures, ringtones, applications and business content. Ringtones are expected to remain the power engine behind non-voice services, even if there is hope that other services might gain some popularity.
