Pop star shows up in giant feathered yellow cape

The theme of this year’s Costume Institute Benefit Gala, aka the MET Gala, held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, was “China: Through the Looking Glass.” There were several outfits that really stood out, but none as much as Rihanna’s yellow cape / gown.

That was both a bad thing and a good one, as the Twitter and Instagram samples below show. Fashion watchers loved Rihanna’s outfit and her on-point attitude, which made it possible for her to work it, but the people at home thought it was rather funny and not really so fashion-forward.

Rihanna the show-stopper

You can see photos of Rihanna’s gown in the gallery below. We should probably preface this by saying that it wasn’t as much a gown as it was a giant feathered cape. It seemed very heavy as well, in addition to the fact that it had the longest train ever to be featured on a MET Gala red carpet.

In fact, the train was so long and heavy that Rihanna needed 3 men to handle it, getting it ready for photos and helping her go up the stairs. In a way, they came in the same package as the dress / cape.

The designer of this beautiful, luscious creation was Guo Pei, and Rihanna set it off with a gorgeous golden headpiece with dragon details and a pair of sparkly golden heels.

Whether you like her outfit or not, you have to admit that Rihanna went heavy on the attitude, which allowed her to carry off this look admirably. This always holds true for the Barbadian beauty: she could be wearing a garbage bag and she’d still be able to make it work by simply being her confident self in front of a camera.

At the same time, regardless of whether you like the outfit or not, you can’t deny that Rihanna made an impression, which was probably her goal when picking out her outfit. She’s not the kind to want to pass unnoticed, especially at an event of this magnitude (the MET is often called “the Oscars of fashion”).

She wanted to stand out, and stand out she did. We’ll discuss further on at what cost.

Rihanna and the yellow cape became an instant meme

Because Rihanna wanted to be noticed, the Internet stood up and paid attention to her at the Gala. She instantly became a meme, with most commenters comparing her to an omelet.

Others, definitely kinder folk, thought she looked like Belle from the Disney cartoon “Beauty and the Beast,” while even more compared her to Spongebob Squarepants.

All in all, the Internet had - and continues to have - fun at the expense of Rihanna and her latest risky fashion attempt. What do you think of it? Let us know in the comments below.
